Estimate Questions

When should I begin to contact companies about estimates for my upcoming move?

It’s best to contact moving companies 5-6 weeks before your desired move date and select your mover at least four weeks ahead. Confirm your packing, pick-up, and delivery dates early.

What type of estimates are available?

There are three types:

  • Non-binding: A carrier’s estimate based on the weight of your shipment. The final cost is determined by actual weight and services provided.
  • Firm binding: An agreed-upon cost based on the estimated weight, unaffected by actual weight.
  • Option binding (Not-to-exceed): The final cost will not exceed a set amount but can be lower if the actual weight is less than estimated.
What are the payment methods accepted?

Payment must be made in full before unloading. We accept cash, money orders, certified checks, and credit cards (MasterCard, Visa, Discover, American Express).

What are my rights and responsibilities when I move?

Federal law requires movers to provide the “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move” document. This outlines your obligations and remedies in case of issues.

Packing Questions

Can I leave the items in my dresser drawers?

You can leave clothing in drawers if your shipment doesn’t require storage. Non-clothing items should be packed.

Will the movers load the boxes I packed?

Yes, as long as the boxes are deemed safe for transport. However, liability coverage differs between self-packed and professionally packed boxes.

Can I pack and move my plants?

It’s not advisable to move plants. Movers will only accept plants for short distances, and cross-state moves may involve regulatory restrictions.

What items cannot be packed?

Hazardous materials, aerosol cans, perishables, and personal valuables shouldn’t be packed. These should be handled by you directly.

How should I prepare my appliances?

Appliances should be disconnected and defrosted before moving. A service firm can help with appliance preparation.

How will my mirrors and pictures be protected and packed?

We use specially designed cartons and wrapping materials to ensure maximum protection for mirrors and pictures.

What protection options do my belongings have during transport?

We offer valuation options to protect your belongings. These are not insurance but provide varying levels of protection during shipping.

Loading & Delivery Questions

What can I expect on moving day?

Our driver will do a walk-through to identify items being moved, protect your floors and doorways, and load items with proper padding. You’ll sign off on an inventory list before loading.

What is a shuttle?

Shuttle service uses a smaller vehicle when the residence is inaccessible to our normal trucks. Goods are transferred from a small vehicle to our larger truck or vice versa, depending on the situation.

How will I know when my shipment is going to be delivered?

We’ll provide a delivery window based on the weight and distance of your shipment. Your driver will contact you 48 hours before delivery.

Should I tip my movers?

Tipping isn’t required but is appreciated for exceptional service. You can tip 5-15% of the moving charge or offer a flat rate per mover. Providing water or lunch is also a thoughtful way to show appreciation.
